Professor Richard Elmore, in a recent reddit, was asked why there are so many liberals among college faculty.
It has NOT been my experience at Harvard or any of the other institutions I have taught at that all academics are liberals. Quite the opposite. By my standards academics are among the most conservative people in our society, at least in terms of being able to imagine a future that is different from the present.
Schools as we know them are profoundly conservative institutions; they are resistant to change; they defend themselves and other societal institutions – including modern-day liberalism and neo-conservatism and many other strands of the great civic religion which props up the elite power-brokers of the society on which it feasts.
