Compulsion is Incompatible With Freedom

Malala was prevented by the Taliban from going to school; she was even shot. Both of these actions are terribly wrong. She should have the freedom to attend school, just as she ought to have the freedom to speak, or to attend church, and so forth.

But freedom is not compulsion. I have a “right to speak,” but this does not imply or require compulsory speech.

A “right to compulsory education” is no right, no benefit, but a form of slavery.

George Orwell would add the language of this award to his list of Newspeak.
